Things to Do Near Helen GA in October

October 5, 2026

October near Helen, GA is a full month: Oktoberfest runs nightly, the hills start to turn and the tubing outfitters are still going on some days. For a group staying at Monarch’s Roost, about 10 minutes from downtown Helen, the easy plan is one outing by day and one in town by night. Everything below was checked against official pages in late September 2026, and hours, prices and conditions change, so confirm current details on each official site before you go.

What is going on in Helen in October 2026?

The Helen Chamber of Commerce lists the 56th Helen Oktoberfest at the Helen Festhalle (1074 Edelweiss Strasse) as running nightly from October 1 through November 1, 2026. Hours and adult admission as listed:

Night Hours Adult admission
Monday to Thursday 6 PM to 10 PM $10
Friday 6 PM to 11 PM $15
Saturday 1 PM to 11 PM $15
Sunday 1 PM to 7 PM Free

The Chamber also lists a Stein Holding Competition on October 10 (6 to 8 PM) and a Halloween costume party on October 31. Children 6 to 12 pay less, and children under 6 are free. IDs are checked at the door and the event is smoke-free. For a fuller plan, see our guide to where to stay for Helen Oktoberfest.

Is tubing the Chattahoochee still open in October?

On some days, yes. Cool River Tubing (590 Edelweiss Strasse) states on its website that it was open every day until September 21, 2026, weather and water level permitting, “then on Friday - Monday until it’s too cold.” That is a schedule, not a promise: it depends on weather and river level, and the outfitter’s own page notes low water can mean walking on the long ride. Its listed prices are $14 on weekdays and $16 on weekends and holidays, with a shorter ride of 1 to 1.5 hours and a longer one of 2 to 2.5 hours.

We could not find an October schedule on Helen Tubing’s website, so we are not making a claim about them. Check the outfitter’s site, and dress for cooler mornings, before you book a float. In a group of 14, decide early who wants to be on the water and who would rather browse in town.

When does fall color show up?

Nobody can promise a date. A foliage forecast tracker, More Than Just Parks, listed White and Habersham counties in a peak week of November 4 to 10 in its September 26 forecast, with a stated median error of 6 days and a note to check with the land manager before you travel. Habersham County’s page says the optimum time to see the leaf change in the north Georgia mountains is normally the last weekend in October, about a week earlier at higher elevations. Our fall foliage guide walks through how to pick a window. Early October is more about warm afternoons and the first hints of color than full peak.

What are good daytime outings?

Our Nearby page lists approximate drive times from the cabin. These are the daytime stops we point groups to:

  • Anna Ruby Falls, about 5 minutes. The 0.4-mile paved trail leads to twin waterfalls, with some steep sections. The visitor center is listed as open 9 AM to 6 PM year-round, with ticket sales ending at 5 PM. Admission is listed as $6 for ages 16 and up, and children 15 and under are free. It is closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The operator asks commercial, non-profit and charter groups of more than 10, such as camps and tour companies, to submit requests 90 days in advance. It is worth checking their page for current details before you bring a large group.
  • Unicoi State Park, about 5 minutes. The park is listed as open 7 AM to 10 PM, with five hiking trails ranging from a one-third-mile nature trail to a six-mile round trip. A $10 Georgia State Park pass is listed for parking.
  • Habersham Winery, about 8 minutes. The winery’s site lists tasting room hours of 11 AM to 7 PM Monday to Thursday, 11 AM to 8 PM Friday and Saturday and 12:30 to 7 PM Sunday, with tastings ending 30 minutes before closing. It says it was established in 1983.

Where do we stock up before a cabin evening?

Betty’s Country Store, at 18 Yonah Street in Helen, lists hours of 7 AM to 9 PM every day and describes deli items, bakery goods, produce, groceries, and beer and wine. It is about 10 minutes from the cabin, which makes it a natural stop on the way in. Firewood is not provided at the cabin, so plan to buy it on your way, as we mention in our Atlanta drive guide.

How should we split the days?

A workable pattern for a Friday-to-Sunday group:

  1. Friday. Arrive after the 4 PM check-in, cook at the cabin, then use the hot tub and sauna.
  2. Saturday. Waterfall or winery in the morning, lunch in Helen, a float only if the weather and river are cooperating, then the Festhalle in the evening.
  3. Sunday. Slow breakfast, then a short Unicoi walk before you head home. Check-out is 10 AM.

Explore Helen says peak fall can add 45 minutes or more to drives near Helen, so leave earlier than you think you need to, and download your directions because cell service is limited around the cabin.
